Sundell Finds Right Medicine in Dodge City

August 5, 2014

DODGE CITY, Kan. – In the last several years, saddle bronc rider Wade Sundell has had no luck during the finals of the Dodge City (Kan.) Roundup Rodeo.

All that changed on Aug. 3.

Sundell won the average with 173 points on two head by riding Frontier Rodeo’s Medicine Woman for 92 points in the finals. It was the highest-marked saddle bronc ride of the 2014 season, edging CoBurn Bradshaw’s 91 on Diamond G Rodeo’s Marla’s Rose in Cedar City, Utah, on June 14.

“I almost ran the van in the ditch (Saturday night) when I got the text message I drew Medicine Woman,” Sundell said. “I was so excited.”

Medicine Woman, the 2011 PRCA Saddle Bronc Horse of the Year, was as good as advertised for Sundell.

“I just knew I had to keep my chin down and keep gassing it,” Sundell said. “It was every bit as good as I thought it would be. From the time I nodded my head until the time the whistle blew, it felt like I was bucked off every time. I knew it (the score) had to be good.”

Sundell left Dodge City with $4,030 in winnings – $2,303 for winning the average.

“I’ve been coming to Dodge City for like five or six years, and I’ve never done well in the finals,” Sundell said. “Things never ended well for me in the finals at all. I’m glad things were different (Sunday night).”

Sundell’s 173-point total was one point better than Cody Wright and Jacobs Crawley, who tied for second place.

Sundell, who has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo the last five years, is third in the Aug. 4 Windham Weaponry High Performance PRCA World Standings.

“I just have to keep my momentum going,” Sundell said. “No one else is going to slow down.”

Other winners at the $308,467 rodeo were all-around cowboy Landon McClaugherty ($1,050 in team roping and steer roping), bareback rider Richmond Champion (166 points on two head), steer wrestlers Timmy Sparing, Bray Armes and K.C. Jones (13.5 seconds each on three head), team ropers Kaleb Driggers and Patrick Smith (17.4 seconds on three head), tie-down roper Cody Ohl (31.2 seconds on three head), steer roper Tyrel Taton (43.0 seconds on three head), barrel racer Christine Laughlin (51.69 seconds on three runs) and bull rider J.W. Harris (172 points on two head).
